185 mph Category 5 Hurricane Melissa makes landfall in the island nation of Jamaica
On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Category 5 Hurricane Melissa made landfall on the Caribbean island nation of Jamaica, packing sustained winds of 185 mph with gusts over 200 mph. By windspeed, this is one of the strongest hurricane landfalls in recorded history. By barometric pressure, Melissa is tied for the most intense hurricane landfall in the historical record.
Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica — specifically in New Hope. However, catastrophic damage extends from Black River (Saint Elizabeth Parish) to Bluefields in Westmoreland Parish and every town and village in a swath through and to the east of Montego Bay. Outside of this swath of severe and catastrophic damage, heavy damage — whether by strong wind gusts, flooding, or surge — is extensive and occupies most of western Jamaica.
These affected communities are without water, electricity, and basic resources that many of us take for granted on any given day. Roads are also blocked in many communities. However, Jamaicans (and others on the ground) are rising to the occasion to recover and rebuild their great island nation. As they recover and rebuild, they will need the support and donations of all of us.
